velvet drive 10-17-004 no reverse!

I have a 94 ski gecko w/ mercruiser engine/ velve drive model 10-17-004 - my brother borrowed my boat and while using it the reverse went out - when you put the boat into reverse it goes forward - same when when you put it into forward it also goes forward - please help - any advice appreciated! jg
