gradings everyone. April 21/2008
I Recently acquired a 27 ft Scotty's craft, and it came with two merc's 3.7 / 470 engines. also two velvet drives 1.91.1 one is a AS7-71CR (early production) and by the way ''not too happy .... and the other is a 1017 008 - 71c. (current production).
Originally this boat wast equipped whit 71C AS7-71CR AND AS7-71C matched pairs.
It looks like that, the original AS7-71C died and was replaced whit
a 1017 008.
Now, both transmissions, are RIGHT HANDED, therefor, one 470 engine, wast reconfigure to rotate backwards.
So, in the opinion of some of my mechanics Friends. It looks like,
the mercruiser 3.7 470 four banger engine..IS not, a very happy camper
wend it comes to rotating in the opposite direction that it wast design, or intended to normally rotate, and operate.
And example of this is, The timing chain tension-er configuration.
And This is mi dilemma: aim not sure, if too keep the current setup
or go ahead and find a 1.91.1 / 1017 007 (the pair of my) 1017 008.
It, looks to my, that the 1017 007 is rare transmission to find.
(aim searching for a used one, in good working order).
Or if it is possible to reconfigure my AS7-71CR TO to make her a, left handed transmission. aim not sure but, i figure that by removing the 1.91.1 reduction unit from the rear of this transmission and, adding a L/H reduction unit from a 1017 007, i may have effectively change the rotation of the output shaft.
'BUTT'... then again, aim not sure, if this is possible.
Some body please HELP. Thanks George
